I would encourage anyone interested in tech to find ways to expand and demonstrate their curiosity, and desire for learning new things. Tech is fast moving, and as a business or solutions analyst for a big tech company, I work with developers who are now using tools and technologies that didn't exist when they were at school or getting qualified.

Volunteering for tech charities, or offering support to other groups you might work with, such as social clubs for groups that might have a website, or database, or need other tech-y support. Get confidence, and figure out if it's really what drives you.

Learn about the different opportunities in tech - there are many more than coding - and how they work together. Understand agile methodologies, and how teams work together in technology.

Think about joining tech type meetup groups, forums and getting involved in open source projects - these all offer networking and development opportunities, and often ways to demonstrate skills to future employers.

Hi Ever! I am so glad to hear that you're interested in technology! I am a young woman working in the field of technology. Many technology jobs seek candidates that have strong technical skills. These include Excel, coding languages, Tableau/PowerBI, and other software. I would recommend you learn some of these skills through online resources, such as YouTube videos or Khan Academy, and put them on your resume. To look for technology positions, I would recommend you refer to LinkedIn and Glassdoor. I would recommend you read the job description carefully and ensure that your resume aligns well with the skills they're looking for. Also, the first job you get may likely not be a huge technology company which is okay! Gaining experience from smaller companies is very beneficial for both your personal and career development. Hope this helps!

If you are referring to a big tech company such as Google or Apple, you will need to have a minimum of a bachelors degree in computer science from a top school and have a good GPA and portfolio of successful internships. If that is not the path your are ready to take, there are many different ways to get into the technology field, but they typically begin with education. If you take some college classes or get an Associates degree, you can get your foot in the door in a company as a computer technician or developer and then work toward completing your Bachelors degree on the side. This will allow you to get relevant experience and pursue your degree which will then open up doors to grow in your career, including applying for a role at a big tech company. I think you will ultimately find that it is not working for a big tech company that will be your end objective. You will likely find that creating a fulfilling career for yourself where you are constantly challenged and have the opportunity to learn and grow will be what motivates you.

what's a good route to take to in order to one day be able to work for a big tech company?

Once you graduate or have some work experience under your belt, a good route you can take in order to one day be able to work for a big tech company is to network with old friends and classmates who might be able to recommend you and put a good word in for you.
A lot of people get hired through word of mouth. Don't limit yourself in terms of where you search for work. Look everywhere. Search all the major sites like indeed, dice, monster....etc. A clean, updated profile, resume goes without saying and make sure when you have an opportunity to get the job you make a first good impression by following all the interview guidelines...hope that helps.

I would recommend once you get your degree to try to do some type of internship with a big tech company that will allow you to build your resume and gain valuable skills. Most jobs are more about who you know vice what you know, establishing contacts and doing some networking is a good way to get your foot in the door at a big tech company.

Technology is a very large field. Is there a particular area in technology that interest you? Do you like to fix or build computers? Are you into programming? Are you into gaming? If you are passionate about any one area, I would suggest you follow it. Once you get started, you'll see how expansive the technology field is and the many career paths you can choose. If you decide to go to college, join clubs and network with other students. Work with your advisor to do internships with companies. Networking and internships will be very beneficial in your journey.

Eden’s Answer

Hi Ever! I recently graduated from undergrad and joined a technology company in the supply chain sector. My main suggestions are to go out an get as much experience you can at university and summer jobs! I recommend joining a club and applying for the executive board that is related to your major, and if you are looking for more experience keep an eye out to participate in case competitions as well. Joining clubs will benefit in networking with other students and professionals, learning more about your major and opportunities, and personal and professional growth. And then attend your school's career fairs! Career fairs help greatly to learn more about companies, get your name out, and even gather advice. Try to get two internships with different companies so you can get more experience and learn more about your interests. And most importantly, show your great personality and interest.

I'd suggest researching trends in technology, learning about them, then search companies' web sites for internships that relate to the technology field you are interested in. I also think adding volunteer work to your resume that includes what you've done with technology shows your passion to potential employers.

Technology is very broad and a field in which is growing. Looking at the stock market, it is the strongest growth area. It's an area that continues to grow and evolve. It is an enriching career path.

To get a view in to the industry look within your circle of influence for help. Your family, your friends family, teachers that may know someone working in technology. Ask to get an interview with them and with someone within their workforce. Prep with questions. Consider asking to intern for them. Also look for volunteer opportunities. Get a mentor and many mentors to help you navigate in your growth.

Great question Ever !! Below are some of the key points to keep in mind for a career in technology

Pursue a degree in Computer Science/Information Technology
Read Tech Journals and other relevant magazines to stay current
Gain practical knowledge/hands on experience by collaborating with great resources in the same field
Make best use of the relevant youtube videos, w3schools, udemy websites etc.
Try to get an internship in a tech firm so that you will be better prepared once you start looking for a job
While studying for the degree course, you could do unpaid internships (if paid options are not available) to gain knowledge and experience
Be optimistic and keep your confidence throughout even in the midst of any negative situations that may arise

Hi, In todays world, cyber security is at the top of every company’s priorities. It a highly visible and sought after talent. Cyber security will also enable expsosure to networking and the two go hand in hand. The teens in my life tend to be leaning towards gaming, animation and the creation of APPS.

Technology offers such a wide range of options. If there are youtube videos on some of these topics check it out. Some software companies offer free intro classes to their products and that is another great place to start. Monitoring tools like solarwinds and riverbed used to offer these types of overviews.

Test the waters and see what interests you the most.

Hope this helps

There are a lot of ways to get involved in the tech industry. I would personally recommend that you find something that you are passionate about within the realm of business. This is my general career advice within or outside of tech. That being said, supply chain management, engineering, analytics are just a few of the areas of tech that are growing exponentially. Best of luck!

Hey Ever ,
So let me give you my two cents. At this point if you interested in technology and want to learn more you find entry level certification path a fast path to deciding which kind of technology you want to start focusing on. Most folks will start with Comptia A+ or Comptia Network + and from there not only will that allow a deeper understanding of which technology set you want to work in . This could be done in addition to traditional college or tech school . Nice part about it also is that it allows you prove you have a skill set that can parlay in to some real work experience while your in school maybe on a part time gig on say a Help Desk doing basic troubleshooting / services. From there branch out your studies find the next thing you're interested about i.e. Security ( like Patricia mentioned) or maybe Cloud Computing, Linux ( Red Hat etc.) . Technology is wide and deep .. So make it what you want it to be . Just Keep Learning , Keep getting bigger, faster, stronger!

All The Best,
Keenan
