Aastha’s Answer

Hey! I was also in the same spot when I was considering a role in the medical field. I wish I knew that I did not have to narrow down my options so quickly. I should have spent more time shadowing and see if there was a better choice for me. Don't be afraid to reach out to people and see what their roles are so you can find the best fit for you!

There are so many things I can think of, which are:

1. You can major in literally anything, but you have to have your prerequisites done. Many schools like to see that you are a well rounded individual and actually majored in something other than chemistry or biology.
2. Undergrad doesn't prepare for med school because having a well-planned schedule is essential to progress in med school.
3. It can take some time to actually find what you are in love with and you enjoy, so it's okay if it takes time.
4. Not every student studies the same way and that is okay!
5. Start studying for licensing exams from the start.
6. Always ask for help because it will save you so much time in the end when you are studying for exams.
7. The residency process is stressful, but it is rewarding at the end.
8. The BIGGEST one is self relaxation because your body needs all the strength and energy to get through the day.

Some things I would've liked to know are:
- There is the Osteopathic Medicine path to becoming a doctor (D.O. school) which counts public health as part of the science GPA and does not include Calculus
- You can major in anything, literally anything! For example, you can major in public health, psychology, english, dance, etc. Something that you are more passionate about. Just as long as you complete the pre-medical requirements and do well, that is all that matters!
- Do things that you are more passionate about, it may take time to find it but once you do, hold onto it as tight as you can! For example, I found my passion in writing and do that as a minor in addition to my major in order to destress but also because the creativity helps relieve me from being surrounded by just medical related things!
- Don't be afraid to find things you do not like and things that you like! Don't hesitate in the face of failure as well, you are human and it happens. There is nothing wrong with it, as long as you get back up and continue trying!
