The fact that you have acknowledge that it is challenging for you at school is a great start. Narrowing in on what the distraction is and how to limit is what is important. If it's your classmates or friends, it may be good to move to a different area of the class. I found myself feeling a bit more anxious at school completing work and making sure I gave myself enough time before the bell rang or if I had a test that day in a different class, that anxiousness would bleed into other classes. That anxiousness can make it more difficult to focus on the work in front of you. Again, limit that anxiousness, but giving yourself more time to prepare for that class or test or take the time to understand the assignment to ensure you'll have the time you'll need. Set a goal for yourself if you feel overwhelmed with whats in front of you- sometimes breaking something down into smaller parts can make it easier to complete.

Bryan,
It is very easy to get distracted in a public setting when there are so many people around you. To see why you work better at home but not at school - see if you can identify and acknowledge what is distracting you. It could be so many things like maybe you are sitting beside a student who hums or coughs constants and that distracts you. Or you are sitting close to the vent and the air flow makes you cold. Or it could be you are close to the window for example and that makes you look outside and takes away your concentration. See if you can identify what is breaking your focus in school.
Once you identify what is causing you to lose focus, see how you can mitigate that. Maybe changes places with someone else. Sometimes, even acknowledging what is distracting you, will help you consciously ignore that and help you focus. Seek help from a teacher - share what is distracting you and ask their help in mitigating that distraction. Also think about how you have things at home that help you focus - and see if you can replicate that at school.
Hope this helps!

You have to think of your time at home as valuable?
It is when you get to choose what you want to do.
So I used to always think of anything I was able to get done at school, as a little reward for me when I got home. More free time, plus at school you have classmates and the teacher available to help you through your assignments. They are excellent in reducing the time needed to complete an assignment. I am amazed at how little students use their teacher these days. I would quickly work through what I could and try to get assistance from the teacher for the really tough stuff. Also, if you read through assignments before you go to class, then you can get your questions answered during the teachers presentation...that really helps! Get those around you on the same page, even plan fun stuff after school, if they live near you, so that there is a group working through the assignments together. It makes school life a lot more fun.

Hi Bryan!
School is a very distracting place. It’s probably not you, but the environment. I’m currently a student and I have 4 children so I’m sure you can imagine that I have a lot going on. I have to read a lot for my program and sometimes it’s really hard to focus. Some things I do to help me be successful are:
1. Set a goal. It doesn’t matter if it’s reading, math, etc. Set a goal for yourself for how many problems or paragraphs or pages you’d like to get through. Look at the time and say “Ok, no matter what, I’m going to work for the next 15 minutes on this assignment.” That goal will help you maintain your focus.
2. Take breaks. When you are working even when it’s quiet, it’s helpful to give yourself little breaks and you don’t even have to leave the room! You can just put your pencil down and stretch or sit quietly for a moment. This will give your mind a break and help to refocus.
3. Do what you can at school and plan to take the rest home and finish. If it’s an in-class assignment, unfortunately you’ll have to go ahead and push through. You can use the steps above to help with that. If it’s an assignment you can take home then do what you can at school and take the rest home where you know you’ll be able to fully concentrate.
I hold these tips help you become more successful at school! Just remember to stay focused and diligent!
Sincerely,
Brittany
