How do I get more clients when I start cutting hair.
Hey, My name is Manuel. Im a student at Burton high in San Francisco CA. I want to become a barber and cut hair professionally . I know most of the basics in barbering but what I still don't know is how am I going to get clients. Or how will find enough people to cut their hair so I can practice. #Barber

Here are a few options to ponder:
1) Have your friends and family recommend your service to the people they know.
2) Post on Facebook Market Place.
3) If you have college or univ. nearby, post your service on the bulletin board where students can get discounted hair-cut.
4) Spend a few months at franchise-based hair Cuttery such as Fantastic Sams, SuperCut, etc.
Let people know of yourself and ask them to refer you to their friends. So when you go on your own, these people will come to you.

I agree with Atul's answers.
If you are looking just to practice, it might be great to give back at the same time.
-Perhaps you could work with veterans or homeless organizations to provide free haircuts while getting the experience.
-You could also reach out to senior homes as well and offer to volunteer free services for experience.
-You could reach out to the homeless coordinator at school districts. Often times children cannot afford a real haircut and it can really affect their self-esteem.
It's key to market yourself:
-Get business cards. You can get free ones on Vista Print or find very low cost options on most websites.
-Make a business FB page and market yourself. You can pay as little as $10 to boost a post on a business page and see huge results.
-Many other businesses will allow you to put up flyers: Panera Bread, McCallister's Deli, Which Wich, churches, community centers, etc.

I've been licensed for 20 years. I'm going to be completely honest with you like I was with my students when I was teaching. Your first year is the hardest. Your best form of advertisement is word or mouth. There are so many amazing changes with time in this industry but this form or building a clientele will always be your best. Come up with ideas in the area where you are going to work to do someone's hair who works close at a discounted price for them to hand your card out. What is hard is if someone gets an amazing haircut they tell 3 people, they get a bad one they tell 20. Create yourself a WOW factor that sets you aside from anyone in any of the shops in your area. The WOW factor is something extra that makes that person in your chair feel special and like a priority and they say WOW not only the cut but also the experience. Also all the advice above is great advice. The more you put into your new adventure the more you will get out of it. And believe in yourself don't let the speed of building discourage you. I've personally seen people grow their business and become very successful through marketing themselves through social media. Think about Social Media pages you may follow and what do they all have in common. Generally its quality work with great photo's that highlight their talents.
I also like the idea of donating your time. Many nursing homes or VA's are often looking for volunteers to help in the community. A fresh haircut can often change someone's perspective on life (even for a day). If you are just starting out many commercial hair places would be ideal to start building clientele.
