How long does it take to be a travel nurse?

Thank you comment icon The previous answers are great. I would only add a couple things. Ask about where they'll put you up. At least make sure it's clean. The agency should have reviews from previous travelers in that area. in a small town you sometimes have limited choices. gladly you can now look up almost any hotel online - not only the official site but traveladvisor's reviews too. Check out the neighborhood on google maps from home beforehand to find the grocery store, etc, as well as extracurricular things you enjoy. i traveled before the internet existed and missed out on chances to hike & do other fun stuff outside because i didn't know they were available. that's what travelling is about so don't miss out like i did. Tonya’s Answer

Once a person graduates from nursing school from either a 2-year (Associate degree) program or 4-year (Bachelor’s degree) program. The 4-year degree program will provide more work opportunities. Then the person would work in a hospital / healthcare setting for 1-2 years before traveling.

There are many different settings a travel nurse can work. A nurse can be a “travel nurse” who works nationally and/or internationally in hospitals and various healthcare settings. Then there are also “travel health nurse” who work with people who traveler in preparing for their trip, healthcare support during their travels, and post travel care. I have included websites for both types of travel nurse positions.

I agree with Tonyas’ answer.

Most travel agencies want you to have at least 1 year experience before you start travel nursing.

Each travel agency is different in what they require and how you get your contracts, salary and benefits. It’s wise to shop around and compare before signing up.
