Ideally work weeks are 40 hrs, i.e: 5 days a week/8hrs a day with two days off. Now depending on your occupation and company policy you could work more than that. However, working more than 40/hrs in a week will subject you to be reimbursed with over-time pay and in some cases if your work week is over 52 hours it constitutes that you be paid double pay for hours worked over 52.

In healthcare and network operations, it is pretty common that people work more than 8 hours a day or some even work 5-7 days a week every now and then.

You just have to pace yourself and make sure not to over do it.

Erica’s Answer

It varies depending on the speciality. I’m an Ob/gyn. So right now o work m-f 8-5. However, I can take some call and those range from either 12 or 24 shifts. Depending on the practice you might have to take call 1-3x a week in addition to your office ours. However, if you work as an Ob hospitalist it is very different. They typically work only in the hospital around 8-12 shifts that are 12 or 24 hrs long.
