For game design, if you like the technical aspects, I'd suggest software design, software engineering, computer engineering or similar majors. Some universities may have a specific program in game design. There may also be some more business-oriented majors that could work on game design. These typically would have some reference to design and user experience in their descriptions.

You could consider going to a program like the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy. It allows you to specialize in many tracks of your choosing, such as art, programming, or project management. I wouldn't say there is any one best major, but rather you can choose a path that suits you. If you're more of an artist, then could pursue that. If you enjoy working with people and planning things out, then a management or development path may be good for you.
