If you are exercising on your own, doing exercises with a weighted backpack can be very useful in preparing for being able to work fires with an oxygen pack on. Be sure that you keep the straps tight on the backpack and use on that can buckle around the front to ensure you don't put additional strain on your back.

Another way to prepare (both physically and with knowledge) is by volunteering on a local fire department. Many departments will have volunteering and cadet opportunities that will allow you to start participating in training, which will help you to prepare.

Some exercises and training you could do to better prepare yourself for Wildland Firefighting training could be the following:
-Running hills in layers of clothing with a heavy, weighted backpack. This can help simulate the firefighting gear and hose packs. The heavier the backpack and more clothing you have the better. I would recommend some sweats and sweatshirt with hoody, in boots or some type of hiking shoe.
-Push Ups, Pull up bar exercises
-using a shovel to dig holes or trenches for an extended period of time, in same gear I mentioned to run in. This helps simulate “cutting line” which is a tactic used to help stop and prevent fires.

According to Harvard Health, rowing machines give you as close to a total body workout as possible on any machine. They work the back, arms, and legs simultaneously. Geoff Keller, a physical therapist with Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital told Harvard Health, “Besides being a great cardio workout — it’s easy to reach the desired intensity in a short amount of time — rowing can address all the major muscle groups at once and doesn’t put stress on your joints or strain your back. “

Helaine Knapp, the CEO of CityRow, high-intensity indoor rowing classes with studios across the country that now has an at-home machine, the CityRow GO Max Rower, told Ladders, “I was initially drawn to rowing because it’s so, so good for you. It works 85% of your muscles with every stroke and is low impact. Because it’s full-body, it’s incredibly efficient, so you can get a killer workout in 20 or 30 minutes.”
