Malcolm,
For sure, you need to learn how to design software and to think logically.
Start thinking about which university you will attend. I recommend you earn a computer-related degree in an accredited university because it provides you much credibility when interviewing for jobs.
I do not recommend that you attempt to learn computer programming on your own and then interview for jobs without a computer-related degree.
Look around on Career Village for other questions about Video Game questions as there are a few related questions with good industry-specific answers.
Explore local universities in your area which offer degrees in Compute Science, Computer Engineering, or Gaming Software.
If you are still in High School, take any computer-related class that is offered. Or you can do a Google search for free online computer programming classes.
Microsoft offers free versions of their software compilers (Visual Basic, C, Java, etc). Visual Basic or Java would be the best choice for a self-learning High School student.
Write your own games! The more software that you write, the more competent you will be.
