Theater can be a fantastic choice of study.
While I would suggest you look at websites from nearby community colleges to gauge degree requirements, you may also want to reach out to some of the local theaters. They should have some programs, or at the very least, some volunteer opportunities that might allow you to gain some inside information.
If you do choose to study theater, there are many offshoots that you could take following your studies.
most people think of the TV, Movie, Stage, or other performance focused parts of theater.
But the skills learned organizing cast members, building sets, making costumes, working with customers are all skills that can port over into many other careers. My wife was a theater major in college, but went into corporate training where she was able to be in front of a crowd every week as the instructor.
