What can you do if your job involves traveling but you need a break from traveling?

I know someone who travels to study different cultures but doing so is causing health problems. I've considered a job that involves traveling but I don't know if I will be able to handle the consequences of consistent traveling.

There are a lot of factors to consider as well as health, such as, do you have a family? Will you in the near future? If so, you have to decide how much time away is good for you and them. If issues like these continue to stand in your way, you may not be ready. However, if the thought of traveling excites you, then find a way to make it work! As far as breaks, the only thing I can suggest is being up front about what you are looking for in a travel schedule, or be your own boss. If whomever you are working for is not reasonable, then you know it isn't right.

Marilyn’s Answer

Hi Leah,
Certainly your health is a primary factor in determining a career choice. If you have a chronic condition that might cause a problem in travels, it might determine what you choose. Check the travel requirements of the opportunities you seek prior to interviewing, and then as another person mentioned, be honest with your employer in advance. Sometimes you can enjoy the travel experience part-time such as working for an airline in reservations and being able to travel at a discount, but not being a full-time flight attendant. Study the requirements in advance, and also talk with others in the field. I was a travel group leader in summers and worked for the school district the rest of the year. That gave me the best of both worlds.
Best of luck,
