There are many local organizations that do missionary work. If you want to be personally involved and be aware of where your funds are going it is good to get some insights from a local church on their missionary work.
Take time to pray about this decision as it is big . If you feel called to serve in a missionary organization discuss with your local church pastor about the idea and go where God opens doors for you.
Also watch "American Gospel" on Netflix when you have time.

I would start with your local churches and see if they have any short term mission trips that you can volunteer for.
Our church is going to Nairobi in April and people are raising money to be able to go through a "go fund me" type website.
Look on Facebook for churches/organizations that can help.
There are several Christian organizations, WWAM.org has lots of information on this.
My local Rotary club also did a ton of service projects both domestic and abroad. There are Rotary clubs all over the world.
The more you find other people who are making a difference the more you will learn of ways you can too.
Blessings on your adventure.
Spend time doing research on missionary organizations
Ask you pastor/leader who they know in missionary work
Volunteer for a social project.
Pray for wisdom and a for an opportunity to present itself.
