Kathy’s Answer

Hey Diana,

This is super dependent on which path you are interested in pursuing. Unsurprisingly, every field has its challenges and can be difficult in their own ways, but the more interest, connections, resources, and ultimately: passion you have in a given path, the better your chances are at success. The short answer is: no, it is not hard at all to get into the field of Film and Filmmaking. Many filmmakers start out with an interest in photography, shooting home-made videos on camcorders/cellphones, and more, and have found that their passions have lead them to start their growth in the industry.

I highly recommend the following things to get you started on your journey in filmmaking, to make the process easier, and to have you consider more options accessible to you!

Kathy recommends the following next steps:

Research different positions there are on-set and look-up what their responsibilities are to see if they align with your interests.
Once you find a position, or positions, that you are interested in, do a quick search of specific people in those roles and learn more about their journey in the world of Filmmaking - this will inspire you, motivate you and give you more insight to your path into the Film industry!
Connect with these people via email, social media, and more, to see if you can ask them questions about their profession, their career path, and more to learn about their individual perspectives on the industry.
If you are considering going to a University or College, do more research on different Film programs offered at different schools - look for relevant classes or courses that you might find yourself interested in taking and create a list of them.
You may find that there are free, online resources that may be similarly beneficial for you for your specific field. Do a quick Youtube, Google search on tutorials, "How To's", video guides, Q and A's and more from experienced professionals as part of your research.

Cynthia’s Answer

As someone who has worked with large media and entertainment accounts, I can tell you it is a very large and growing industry.
Content is key.
The first question I have for you is what do you want to do in the movie industry?
If you watch the credits on every movie you will see hundreds of people who were involved.
So ask yourself which of those hundreds of roles are you interested in doing?
Do you want to be in front of the camera or behind.
Do you want to write scripts? Or be involved with scene design?
What about all of the technical pieces pre and post productions?
This type of narrowing down your interest will help you to know where to start.
