Professional’s Answer

It's a very competitive field & who you know is very important. You want to stand out from all the other applicants and immerse yourself in the networks you can find. Look for local Film Festivals and volunteer where you can, even if it's just helping in the background (like getting coffees!). That way you will learn about a lot of the roles (there is so much more than directing or acting) and you'll find what you are most interested and skilled in.

Professional recommends the following next steps:

Find local Film Festivals and attend or volunteer at them

Gloria’s Answer

Hi Diana,

I know two people who worked or work in the film industry. They both took the route of education for two reasons - to get practical experience and to create relationships with other people who want to do some job in the film industry. You do not need to go to any specific school to gain that experience, but find a university with a Film program. You should also determine what you want your area of focus to be. Many film schools divide their programs into job roles like directing, screen writing, acting. Film is a field where a mastery of a specific job role is very valuable. You may have aspirations for more than one role, many do, but the mastery (being very good at one thing) is an important element of getting into the industry.
