Be compassionate, sensitive and emotionally strong.
Good understanding of the theories of mental health and illness.

I would say from my experience have patience is one of the biggest characteristics you need. It is so important to be able to wait for your patients to reach a level they feel comfortable to talk with you, and seek treatment. I also recommend people who are kind and all of the other qualities listed from above comments!
