Hey Lyndsey. There is literally any potential pay scale for music production, from free to millions. Everyone starts small, typically working with friends, fellow students, or musicians in their geographic area. And there are literally no two ways producers become prominent.
Unfortunately, a creative career is a combination of your own talent, the talent and abilities with whom you work, and a whole lotta luck. The best thing you can do is to build a body of work that shows your skills and style. You're probably going to develop a style or genre of music you're best at, and I would recommend sticking to the ones that reflect your skills or success the best.
Sorry my answer is so nebulous, but there's really no one way to do it. Just do it, and keep doing it, until something happens. Ther are jobs you can do while you're building your body of work that can complement your aspirations and skill sets. Think of things like advertising agencies, live sound companies, or other opportunities to learn about sound and music.
