It depends on the setting you find yourself working. Nurses working in direct patient care, such as in hospital or home health, will use different tools and equipment than nurses working outside of patient care roles. A stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, thermometer, and pen light is used routinely to assess patients. IV pumps, urinary catheters, and oxygen are also regularly used by nurses during patient care. Electronic health records are common, and nurses both in and outside direct patient care generally use computers and various electronic health record programs in their work.

It depends which speciality you work in but most inpatient (hospital) RNs use the following pieces of equipment daily:
Stethescope
Report sheet
Pen light
IV equipment
IV fluids
Saline flushes..
The list goes on… These are all the things you will get more familiar w/ once you begin on the unit. Different units use different equipments but if you wanted to prepare I would get familiar w/ using a stethescope and learn about what you would be listening for, and learning about the different IV fluids and which patient would require which type of fluid.

-A decent stethoscope. You will use that every day to assess your patients.
- Pens in bulk and highlighters, too, if you use them
- Dry erase marker to update your patients' boards with
- Bandage scissors
- A report sheet (you may start off using what your preceptor uses, but eventually you will find one that you will like and make your own)
You may need other things, depending on what unit you work on. But these are a good place to start.
