What are methods to changing careers smoothly?

I am an undergrad and a senior getting my bachelor's of social science. I have worked in the insurance industry for two years, but left my last job to focus on my schooling and relocate to the state that I want to go to grad school in. I want to transition into the health & human services field. Should I look for positions similar to what I've done in the insurance industry or focus on volunteering in my industry of choice to gain experience? #career #career-counseling #career-choice #career-path

Christy’s Answer

Absolutely volunteer or seek out some internships in your field. Work experience in your area of focus is very important on a variety of levels. You will be able to narrow your field of options with appropriate job experience!

Volunteering would be a good route to take. It will allow you to get a good feel in that industry and allow you to learn more about it before making a full commitment to it.

Kim’s Answer

You want to start identifying your "transferable job skills." Those are skills you acquired in insurance that are also useful in social services. Things like customer service, maintaining client confidentiality, interviewing people about sensitive subjects, report writing, and my favorite "ability to read, interpret, and apply complex policies and explain them to others in a way that they understand." You are not starting from scratch! It will, however, be up to you to show your future employer how your past experience relates.
