Jacob,

This is a real good question! Believe it or not, as you get older, your brain continues to develop, and you will learn to do what we call "compartmentalize." That means you make little compartments in your brain. Your human self, with all its emotions, will be in one compartment. Your surgeon-self will be in another compartment. When you are doing surgery, your brain will access only the surgeon-self, leaving your human-self out of the picture. For real!

Also, as you go through middle school and high school, and even the first couple years of college, you will have some science classes that require you to dissect (cut open) animals. You will learn through these classes whether or not surgeon is the right path for you.

But even if you don't want to be a surgeon, you could still be a doctor. Not all doctors perform surgery! So, this career will be available to you either way!

Best of luck to you!
Kim
