Are EMTs subject to drug-testing for cannabis?

Trying to learn as much as I can. #learning

Thank you comment icon Hi Rainey! I reworded your question to align with our Community Guidelines. While we prohibit discussion of illegal activity (we default to the federal level in the US), this topic is totally okay in the context of drug-testing requirements for a career. I wanted to make sure you still received advice on this topic, because this is a very legitimate career question. Thanks for posting! Alexandra Carpenter, Admin

This really depends on state laws as well as the job/careers work rules. Most employment will not allow the use of marijuana on the job. However depending on the state you're able to indulge as long as you're not working.
Thank you comment icon Remember that while many STATES have legalized the use, it is still a crime on the Federal level. Granted, the last several administrations have not been enforcing it, but that could change any time there is a new President. Fred Rosenberger

Dan’s Answer

THC is detectable for up to 90 days in hair, anywhere between 3 days to a month or longer in urine (depending on how often the person uses), up to 48 hours in saliva, and up to 36 hours in blood.

The decision to smoke marijuana should be based on whether it diminishes your ability to do the job. And since EMTs are responsible for people's care (and lives), you should never consider smoking weed if it has any chance of affecting your work. Many companies require random drug testing with immediate job termination the result of a positive test. A very good intern of mine who tested positive was immediately fired due to a positive test - he was forced to leave the building within 30 minutes.
