There are opportunities for students interested in a career in medicine to volunteer in other countries that may be of interest to you. I have known a few students who ahve volunteered to do wellness checks in Ecuador and others who have volunteered in programs to spread vaccine awareness in India and Bangladesh. These are shorter stints (3 to 4 weeks) and take you to parts of the world that are underserved and give you an opportunity to work with people directly. If this is something you are interested in, please talk to your advisor in your school as they should have programs that they can vouch for which will provide you a safe and meaningful experience.

Safe travels and Good Luck!!

Tracy’s Answer

A study abroad program can be an amazing experience, especially if you are able to study in the career field you are pursuing. The exposure to different cultures and thinking will broaden your horizons and enable you to examine problems/challenges with a different lens. For many, living abroad is a positive life changing experience as a study abroad program allows you to see, first hand, the world is much bigger than the comfort of your school campus and home. However, not all study abroad programs are the same, you should carefully examine the program to ensure cultural immersion is a core tenant. In addition, many universities have very strict course schedules one must take to graduate on time. You should factor this into your decision - "will the study abroad program derail my degree pursuit?" If graduating on time is not a factor, an opportunity to study abroad is a worthwhile pursuit.
