Are entry level office jobs the only jobs you can get with an Associate of Arts?

I am looking for jobs that are related to non-profits and have found that I don't qualify until I get my Bachelor's. Will my degree only allow me to work in an office setting or a setting that is not a non-profit? #career #office-administration #entry-level

Mounia,
You could become a police officer with an Associates degree.
Why don't you tell us a bit more about what you are interested in, and we could provide some better suggestions?

It would be a good idea for you to get some professional work experience before going for your Bachelors, as it will help you to determine if you are on the right path.
Also, you will want to look for companies whose benefits include tuition assistance programs, as this will help you to defray the cost of your last two years of school.

Thank you comment icon Hi Kim, To clarify I am currently in school getting my Bachelor's but am looking for work in the non-profit sector, specifically in social services or human services. My lack of a Bachelor's at them moment is a bit of an issue when applying to positions. Your statement about getting work experience still seems to apply! Thank you! Mounia

Okay, so, knowing that, why don't we look at this in reverse? Besides an education, what skills are needed to get the sort of professional positions that you want, and how can you acquire these skills while working on your degree?

  1. People skills! You have to be able to prove to a prospective employer that you are a good people-person. Social services often involves interviewing people about very sensitive subjects. You need to be able to get them to trust you and be honest with you. "Lisa, we really need to figure out who the father of this child is. Tell me all your partners for the past 3 months." ETC. Good people skills come from learning Active Listening Skills. Learning to listen before speaking, etc. Believe it or not, you can learn much from a retail job. Not that I necessarily recommend it. . .

  2. What do you mean by "Entry-level office job?" It teaches organizational skills, also important.

  3. Time management: social workers frequently have too much work and not enough time.

My thoughts? I'd be looking for jobs at the school. Resource labs, tutors, etc.

But keep working on this list of skills and how you can acquire them. I think it is an interesting project!

Thank you comment icon Hello Kim,Some of the entry level office jobs I am referring to positions are Administrative Assistant, Executive Assistant, Receptionist, Secretary, etc. I do get your point about how these jobs can still provide me with the skills I need to meet my goals! Thank you for the great advice. Mounia
