Hello Jonathan,

There are plenty of gaming engines out there for first person shooters. I imagine you are a gamer so next you pop in your favorite game at the launch up screens you will usually see the publisher and engine information that the game is running on. This is useful if you know there is a game that you like to play and feel that game engine would be the easiest to work with. As Hassan answered there is a lot of useful information online for different game engines that are available and even tutorial or classes that will show the ins and outs of each engine.

There are absolutely some great engines that you can use to make first person games, and the cool part is that they are often the same tools we use to make games in the industry! Unity Engine is a very versatile engine that can be used to make both first and third person games (and all other kinds in between), and is generally easy to learn and use. Unreal Engine is an industry standard, and is especially good for making FPS style games. The learning curve for Unreal is a bit steeper though. Both are available to download and use for free, and have strong communities for asking questions and learning via tutorials and examples.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_first-person_shooter_engines has a good list with references to games used and release dates. https://www.incredibuild.com/blog/top-7-gaming-engines-you-should-consider-for-2020 has a bit of a feature list for different ones. The most common ones appear to be Unreal, CryEngine, and idTech.

This technology is also used for movies and shows https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/02/the-mandalorian-was-shot-on-a-holodeck-esque-set-with-unreal-engine-video-shows/
Thank you comment icon Didn't know it was used for movies too, thought it was all animation. Thank you for the links though! Jonathan

I know your post was from last year, but I came across it and wanted to mention some engines you can look into which are available to the public and not proprietary to a specific studio:
- Godot
- Unity
- Unreal Engine
- GameMaker
- CryEngine
