Hi Qianlin,

Great question!

No job is stressful if you love doing that job. It's all about how we take any job.

It's just the mind game. It matters how you perceive things. If you love challenges and never stay behind in learning new things, then nothing can stop you!

I have many friends who are working as Programmer and they all love their job. All because they love what they do!

I hope my answer helps!

Good luck!

Brandon’s Answer

I think the short answer is that, jobs in the CS field can certainly be stressful in similar ways to many other careers. A great deal of that stress is what you make of it along with how much pressure/stress you put on yourself. In my experience, programming specifically depend very much on the company you work for and how that company organizes there work. One piece of advice to control that stress I would give anyone who's programming is to very much make sure you understand the overall vision of what you're creating so that you know what you're doing is contributing toward that goal. I would also say that I would be prepared to do some throw-away work at times as you work collaboratively towards a goal. By far the biggest cause of stress I see happen with developers I work with regularly is that due to a breakdown in communication they start development on code that ultimately gets thrown away because the team really didn't understand what they wanted to accomplish. Stay close to folks that understand the vision and you will be good!

Brandon’s Answer

It depends on the type of job you have and the company that you work for. For every job, each can be stressful in their own ways. There isn't an occupation that isn't stressful. While some things may be out of your control, such as hours, days worked, location, and amount of work, it depends on how you deal with it and handle with the work. While it is true that if you love the work it won't be as stressful, there will be times where that won't be the case.

Mickael’s Answer

Hi Qianlin,

I think it's like every job. It can be extremely stressful, but it does not have to be. If you are dealing directly with customer, for instance, it will be probably more stressful compared to other. Yet, these other people might have stress about quality, about keeping deadlines and the like. Like Fred said, each employer has a different culture, different product, different history and stress will happen at different levels. For instance, working on a startup can bring way more stress than working on a very well positioned company. Yet that company will usually struggle a bit in keeping the product up-to-date taking advantage of new technologies/resources ... which new company takes by default.

I've worked for multiple companies, multiple types of software engineering and they all have different moment of stress. I know no jobs that is stress free, honestly.

Dhairya’s Answer

Every job has its challenges and as professional you learn to manage your time, communicate realistic expectations, and become more competent at your job through time and experience. Usually stress comes from the work environment and poor communication practices rather than the actual job itself. Poorly managed projects and teams, unrealistic deadlines and poor leadership are usually what leads to stress. For those scenarios often the best solution is finding a better team or a new work environment altogether. Life is too short to be unhappy in position where you're constantly unhappy.

Kumar’s Answer

It does depend on a Company's work culture and also on how programmer takes it. Many roles expects employee to excel and if the employee works only towards that goal, it could be cause a lot of stress. Impressing others should not be the goal. Constantly thinking about a thing leads to more stress. Working towards a balanced life will surely make work less stressful. Take time away periodically. Keep learning and growing.

Fred’s Answer

It certainly can be, but it's not guaranteed to be. A lot of it depends on what you do, where you are doing it, and what that culture is like.

But every job will have deadlines that have to be met. I've been in IT for nearly 20 years, working at three different employers. Then environment in each was all very different. Even in the places/rolls that were normally very chill, we'd occasionally have deadlines that got super stressful.
