Justin’s Answer

One thing I find really important is to take a language. If you have enough working proficiency in a secondary or third language, it will boost your resume a lot. For example, my school offers 4 years of Vietnamese Heritage. If you took 4 years of a language, employers will like that. If wanting to go to a university, many will require at least 2 years of a language.

In high school, you have a lot more time if you are not taking a ton of AP courses. Search online for a lot of information about jobs, financial decisions, colleges, and careers. Make sure to learn how to find the right information on the internet. Don't get misled by the people who pretend to know what they are talking about.

Justin recommends the following next steps:

Suggestion: Take 4 years of a language. If too late, 2 or 3 years is good too.

Hassan’s Answer

I believe it's the interpersonal relationships and how to get along with other people. The next level would be leadership and influence to motivate others to help you achieve goals. In most jobs you will need other people to get things done. That's one of the reason many college classes include team projects.

Colleen’s Answer

Hi Jiayi!

One of the main things that I wish I would have practiced more in high school would have been to start working on my time management. Even though there are way more classes and periods in high school compared to college, there is a large amount of work that relies solely on you in college because you are on your own. Being able to be independent in college compared to high school is great, your day can consist of classes in the morning, getting homework done, going to hang out with friends at like 1pm-4pm if you would like, because you make your own schedule. However in order to have a fun social life, do your favorite hobbies, good mental health and still perform well in your studies, the essential factor in that is time management. Another thing that could be the learning how to interact with others and being your complete self by doing that. Sometimes in new situations we often find ourselves acting how we want to be like rather than acting how we truly are. The more you act like yourself the more you will find yourself meeting and hanging out people who are genuine and who you actually like.

Hi Jiayi!

Time management, stress management, and organizational skills are also important to learn now! Sometimes your work load can become overwhelming, but as long as you hone in on these skills, you'll do a lot better at handling the situations.

Malavika’s Answer

Hi Jiayi,
1. Patience and composure. A lot of things in your career or personal life will take some time bear fruit, so its important for you to develop these skills.
2. Your soft skills such as communication and how you are articulating yourself is also extremely important. Watching TED talks and attending MUNs were helpful to me when learning how to be concise and clear in my conversations.
3. Another important skill is learning to work in a team or group. While colleges and schools promote a lot of group projects to hone these skills, you should also be aware of the role you are performing since you are both, responsible and accountable for your contribution to the team.
Thank you comment icon I will use this advice as I prepare for my career. Jiayi
