Kevin,

I will assume that you are in High School and that you want to know more about an engineering profession. For example, the four most common engineering fields are chemical, electrical, mechanical, and civil (with quite a few variations of each). As an example, any two mechanical engineers will likely be doing quite different jobs. Any experience in any of the engineering fields is likely to be of use in your career as we tend to evolve towards things we are most comfortable/familiar with. Here are a few ideas which will expose you to engineering related concepts.

1) Ask your neighbors and friends if they know anyone that works in that profession. Talk to these folks and ask them what they do and what the field is like. Ask to go with them on “bring your child to work days”. Most folks have hobbies so you can always ask them to show you what they are doing.

2) For mechanical engineering, ask to help with any friend or neighbor who works on cars. Learn to change a tire. Go with your parent when your car gets inspected and ask the mechanic to explain what he does (maybe even show you the brake pads when he does the inspection).

3) For electrical engineering, you can take things apart. Connect a battery to a toy motor and make it spin. Or connect a battery to a light. If you use batteries (avoid 110Vac house power) you should be quite safe.

4) For civil engineering, you can watch and offer to help with yard projects in your neighborhood (landscaping, wall building, cement pouring, roofing jobs, etc.

5) You can Google search for anything so read whatever seems interesting to you.

6) Ask your school counselor to put you into relevant classes. Any shop class such as drafting, metal, or wood shop will give you hands-on experience.

7) Start collecting your own set of tools (or build a relationship with someone who will loan you tools).

8) Many Community Colleges will allow High School students to register for college level classes - ask your school counselor for guidance.

9) Look at websites like Instructables.com, ehow.com, makezine.com, and of course youtube.com. Just look around at what interests you and build some fun things.

Hi Kevin,

I am not sure what you mean by your question so I am guessing. I think that you are wondering what kind of jobs that are in engineering and how you pick one. In any career, your challenge in finding a specific area of focus really starts with you. For example, how did you come to the point where engineering is a career you want to go into? When you think about engineering, what element do you think of? It will be important to also consider the skills that you already have, think about what you would do if you had a choice, then think about how that can fit into a type of job. Start there - look at careers that use the skills and talents that you already have.
