Dr. Shalini’s Answer

To be precise , you know yourself the best of anyone! Start analysing your strengths and weaknesses. Medicine is a tiring field so only interests can keep you hanging when you are too exhausted. Identify your interest!
While in Medical School, you got to try and sample your choices of different fields and during your clinical years you can identify the area that you like the best and that should be helpful for you to ultimately go into! Remember, Only you can decide this for you.

Gloria’s Answer

Hi Kiera,

This is a very personal question and one that you might not be able to answer until you have entered medical school. I assume that you have a very good reason to want to be a surgeon. It is a noble profession that all of us need at one time or another in our lives.

I would say that you should begin to think about HOW you want to use your skills as a surgeon. For example, I have had a few surgeries, but some of them are by people who I would not immediately call "surgeon". Quite early in my life, I had to have cataract surgeries (one in each eye). The doctor who performed the surgery was someone that in daily life would be called an ophthalmologist. She treated my eye disease until surgery was unavoidable. In this case, her surgical skill was used about once a week and with a specific focus on the eyes. In her weekly work life, she had an office of her own, held business hours, and scheduled her surgeries for specific days of the week, Thursdays. She did all of her surgeries on Thursdays, with patient follow up in the office on Fridays. This is a similar experience for some doctors of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Most of the time they are keeping their patients healthy with appointments and delivery of babies, but they may need to perform various surgeries on their patients as well.
