Sam’s Answer

Hello Britney,

The short answer to your question is LOTS. There are lots of mechanical engineering jobs offered in many different areas. Have a look at this spreadsheet from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The spreadsheet is taken from this Bureau of Labor Statistics webpage, which has some other information about mechanical engineers as well.

Miguel’s Answer

HI Britney, as Sam said there are a lot of different jobs within mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineers are really trained to solve a wide range of problems. The 3 main core engineering disciplines you'll see are in design, controls , and thermal fluids. However, you'll often see mechanical engineers work in a computer programming type role or even business oriented roles. I just graduated a month ago and I quickly realized that our degrees help us get our foot in a company, but many companies will allow you to jump around positions that don't necessarily have to do with your mechanical engineering degree. My advice is to find something you're really passionate for, even if it doesn't fall under the degree.
