What should I do if I want to go into cosmetology?
I would like to work specifically as a nail tech and with hair, is there any techniques, courses, or people I should follow/do/work on to help make myself better at that. What kind of job and schooling should I look for to start out. #cosmetology #art #nails

Hi Eve
You are on the right track....like most other careers, there are schools and people to talk to in the cosmetology world. Hair and nail salons are in many communities. I would check one out, and try to go when they are not too busy, and ask to speak to someone who would be willing to answer a few questions. Or start with yourself and your family, where do you get your haircut? Ask your stylist where they got their training. You might also know someone in your family who is a regular customer at a nail salon or hair salon, and ask them if they recommend anyone in particular who might be helpful. Have 3-5 questions ready, and take notes on what they say. Be sure to write them a thank you note when you get home.
Check out the cosmetology schools in your area either online or in person, and find out how to apply, the costs and so on. Some high schools have cosmetology classes, so ask your guidance counselor if there are any in your school system.
Go to the library and look for fashion magazines and see what hairstyles and nail styles the models and actresses and influencers are wearing. These days, lots of actresses, fashion celebrities, and "influences" have social media accounts, so maybe choose one or two to follow and see what they are wearing, how their hair is styled and what their nails look like. Remember, hair and nails are all part of a "Look".
There are (I'm certain!) lots of tutorials on doing nails and hair on Youtube, Instagram and TikTok. Have a look at those for some ideas, and start doing your nails and hair (if you aren't already!).
I'm a retired art teacher, but over the years, I have always been fascinated by hair and especially nail art, and there is a lot of artistry in nail art. So, if you are not taking art classes, I would recommend you do so. You will learn alot about color and design, which will be helpful in your chosen career.
I hope this helps.

You can either get a cosmetology license by going to cosmetology school, but you can also get your license from other professionals qualified to train you. It's best to start by providing services from your home to avoid large costs of leasing an entire building, and it gives you time to test the waters.

Go to the nearest cosmetology school and sign up. Make sure they have a good reputation and are accredited.
Hi Christy! Thanks for providing the Student this info. Do you happen to have any tips for her regarding her note about specializing in nails & hair?
