How recent graduate should find job in civil engineering in Vancouver?

Hi,
I did my undergrad in civil engineering from India and right now I am doing Applied Planning program in Vancouver and I am new here. There are lot of questions that are crossing my now like:
1. If I wanted to pursue my career as civil engineer, what are the job opportunities for recent graduates here? Do I need to register myself as EIT under APEGBC? Is my undergrad degree valid here? How to network with civil engineering companies? What are some of the civil engineering companies here?
2. If I want to pursue my career as Planner, which private companies can hire me? ( I think city only hires Permanent residents).
3. Is there any field, I can collaborate both things? #civil-engineering #urban-planning #land-development #zoning

I would start by Googling "Civil Engineering Companies in Vancouver". I would also search under General Construction, Building Construction, Bridge Construction, Highway Construction, Municipal Public Works, etc. From this initial search, you should come up with a number of "Civil" companies in the Vancouver area. I would then go to their web sites. Almost all of which will have 'employment pages'. If they do not have such a page (most will), search their web site for the name of the Engineering Manager or President of the company or someone in Management. Send them a cover letter (one page long) and resume stating that you are looking for a job and would like to meet with them to discuss opportunities that they may have. A good cover letter is key here to get you an interview (get some help on how to write a god one).

Hope this helps,

Thank you comment icon I agree with Douglas' answer. Another useful resource is the ENR 400 list of the top contractors globally (https://www.enr.com/toplists/2020-Top-400-Contractors-Preview). This list is not specific to Vancouver but you can do a Google search to see if these contractors have an office in Vancouver. You could also broaden your search by including mining companies as there are a lot in Vancouver and they will also employ civil engineers. Simon Murray

To add to the above questions, you can start getting your PE (Professional Engineering) license. This is very important in Civil Engineering. Usually there are two parts, the first is a more academic test, while the second is a practical exam. Taking (and passing) the first part shows you are serious about the career as well as validates your schooling to potential employers.
