Katie’s Answer

There are many accounting careers that you could pursue. To find out what type of accounting career is best for you, there are a few things you can do/consider. First, you should be taking accounting classes in different fields of accounting. One of those might seem more appealing than others and that might be the career you want to take. Talk to those teaches about careers in that area and see if that sounds like something you would like to do for a living. Also, internships are a great way to see different accounting careers before you have to make a choice after graduation. By interning, you will be able to tell if that career path is right for you.

Do informational interviews with professionals in the types of jobs you are considering. Many alumni will be willing to speak with you or even meet you in person.

Lyndsay’s Answer

There are many ways to learn more about different accounting fields including internships, on campus job fairs and listening to on campus speakers. If your school has a Beta Alpha Psi program, this is a great resource. My local chapter organized different firms coming to speak on campus and I always found this very informative. As a professional, I've also appreciated the opportunity to come back and speak with students and tell them about my job and why I chose the audit profession.

Here's a link for eligibility for Beta Alpha Psi: https://www.bap.org/eligibility

Lyndsay recommends the following next steps:

Research whether your school has a Beta Alpha Psi chapter
Look into a job fair at the Business School

Check with your school on what accounting clubs they offer. Accounting clubs provide resources and give you first hand knowledge on the variety of accounting paths. Does your school have a career center? They can give you guidance, as well. Internships offer first hand experience and entry level opportunities so you can see what a day in the life is like.

Camille’s Answer

You should take classes and get an internship and or volunteer to get a feeling for the different areas.

I took a tax class in college as part of my accounting program and liked it.

Definitely try and get an internship with an accounting firm or the accounting department of a company. Experience will help you get a feel for what you like, and the internship can maybe lead to a job after school.

Next year, you can also volunteer as a tax preparer with VITA at your school (during January through April) : http://www.towson.edu/cbe/outreach/tax.html. When you prepare tax returns you can see if you like tax accounting.

Lindsey’s Answer

I would suggest seeking internships and talking to individuals in different areas of accounting. Personally, I started in public accounting but ended up in internal audit. I have been in audit almost my entire career and it was not something I saw myself doing when I was in college but I was fortunate to have diverse opportunities in my first job so I discovered early on that I enjoyed auditing.
