How likely am I to get a job in the accounting field

Accounting student at Towson university #accounting

Thank you comment icon First, you should fulfill the minimum requirement for that post. Second,Its good if you have done any job or internship before, it makes your resume fruitful. If you didn't do any internship or job before then you don't need to worry about that because its all how you satisfy the panel (interviewers). Mubashar

Hi Ayomide,

Thanks for the question. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accounting/auditing positions are expected to grow at a rate faster than other occupations (the data is through the year 2024). Please visit the following link for this and other data related to the accounting field:

Pay particular attention to the "How to Become One" tab.

Everyone needs accountants. I think the job prospects in accounting field is huge. Not only are there numerous different fields but there is so much capital formation actions occurring to develop small businesses. You can’t go wrong with accounting. It also gets you in the door at companies and then you can see if there is anything operationally you would be more interested in.

It's a great question and from my 20 years since graduation from college, there has never been a time when accountants were not in demand. I have always explained this way to any students in college that are considering accounting as a major.

For many majors, you have to work really hard to get an opportunity or even a job interview (you are knocking on the door to see if anyone will answer the "door" or give you an opportunity). It's just the opposite for accounting majors: there is always an opportunity and job interview available (the 'door" is wide open and someone is asking you to take time and complete an interview). In addition, many of the public accounting firms are hiring hundreds/thousands of graduating accounting majors on an annual basis and the public accounting industry is a great place to share a career (even if you don't stay at the firm long enough to become a partner).

Accountants never need to worry about being unemployed for long. You may struggle to find the perfect job, but if you are flexible about things like company size, location, and salary, it is relatively easy to get an entry level position in the field.

If you want to work for a specific company, you may be able to get an internship or make connections through your school's alumni network far in advance of graduation.
