With jobs, there will always be the opportunity to have promotions. However it will depend on what company you are working for, or potentially looking at. If the job does NOT look like it will allow for any promotions or some kind of advancements, that job will most likely not be the one for you, at least in my opinion. For jobs, you are either doing the work to accomplish one of the following: getting money, getting experience, or some kind of mix between the two. While being at a good spot of a company may be satisfying for some, I would advice to always strive for more.
I appreciate the advice so I am able to pass it along to my students during the Career Preparation Period.

Hi Gina! There are often opportunities to earn promotions but it really depends on the company and industry. My recommendation is that you research specific companies or industries to learn about what promotion opportunities look like. As you are applying and interviewing for jobs, this is also a question that you could ask to better understand how the company views promotion opportunities and if they are likely to promote within. When you find the right company and industry, it's important that you also consider your skill set and what additional skills, certifications or experience you may need to take that next step. Gain an understanding of how the company views career development and if they offer benefits such as tuition reimbursement to allow employees to grow their skills. Best of luck to you!
You rock! This advice is very helpful.

You have to know what you really want to do first. Next you think through what you want your new situation to look like.
Start an easy discussion about your development. But you have to explore the new job. Summarize your track record. Now you will have an option to choose the right one.
Be confident.

Hi Gina,
There is always an opportunity for growth. It may be within the same department, but it may also be in a different department within the same company. Within my company, I had seen my colleague earn the promotion she deserved, as she advanced to a higher level in another department she took interest in. Her experience, her drive, her willingness to "roll-up her sleeves" and take-on new responsibilities, allowed her to succeed.
