Ideally, but not always. College can help you gain internships that will help you get a foot into the film world.

I think the best part about film, and filmmaking in general, is that you don't actually need a college degree to be successful or to even make films.
Despite this, I also think that going to college is very valuable in allowing you to make the much-needed connections & networks that is needed to be successful in the film world. Most of my friends, co-workers, previous classmates, and most importantly: my professors were all people that helped me to get on more HUGE and EXCITING big film projects.
This is all very dependent on a number of factors, which I will highly suggest you to take with you for your next steps.
Think about the kinds of films/movies that you want to make (narratives, documentaries, music videos, and more) and research more about the Directing process for these selection!
Connect with Directors, current students in the Directing track in University/College on LinkedIn or Instagram and ask them about their coursework, what they are studying, and see if it would be something that would be interesting for you.
Try looking into YouTube channels and Masterclasses for Directing, to learn more about the craft and to see if you feel you need more.
Write a script, take a basic movie idea from a friend, family member, and try directing your first short film! This way, you'll find out if there are things you'll need to learn & improve on!
