Daniela’s Answer

Hi Ena,

To help you find that perfect volunteer opportunity that’s in your area here are three websites you can use to search and contact nonprofits for volunteer opportunities.

VolunteerMatch.org

Using VolunteerMatch.org to search for volunteer activities is really straightforward and very simple. You type in your zip code and a keyword about the type of activity you want and you get a list immediately.

Idealist.org

Idealist.org is another great place to search for volunteer opportunities online. My favorite feature of Idealist.org is the ability to drill down to the exact types of volunteer opportunities you’re looking for. If you’re looking to make a career in nonprofit work they also allow you to pull up available jobs or internships in your area.

HandsOn Network

Just like VolunteerMatch.org and Idealist.org you can search for opportunities by type and by location.

I hope this information can help you! Best of luck!

Garrett’s Answer

I would look at your City and Province to see what local groups are spearheading your area. Think about what you are passionate about and the causes you care about. Is it animals? Consider connecting with your local shelters, is it feeding the homeless? Consider food shelters in your area. Do you enjoy behind the scenes stuff from your desk? Consider options that allow you to help from your computer such as helping missing maps. ( ( http://www.missingmaps.org/ )

Tirzah’s Answer

Hi Ena, those are very good ways to find volunteer opportunities. Volunteering is such an honorable thing to do and I hope you know you will grow both personally and professionally as a result of these wonderful experiences.

You can also find some local, national and international opportunities based on your interest. You can use YouTube videos or ask your school or church about shelters for homeless or mentoring other students. There are endless ways to find volunteering and some additional suggestions are:

National Service
https://www.nationalservice.gov/serve/search

Find Community Service and Volunteer Opportunities
https://createthegood.aarp.org/volunteer-search.html

Tirzah recommends the following next steps:

Make a list of your interests...ex., animals, children, sports, gardening
Based on skills you might have, offer them in your neighborhood or school
Determine if you want to try international volunteering or just keep it local

Hi Ena,

If you're currently attending school, a great resource would be looking into Student Involvement opportunities on campus. They may have a website under "Student Life" that houses all the Organizations with links to each group and most Colleges and Universities support Non-Profit organizations with a "calendar of events".

Generally at the beginning of each Semester or the beginning of the School year, most campuses offer a "Student Fair" giving each of these Non-Profit Volunteer groups an opportunity to showcase each groups mission. Each group may also have an office on campus if you'd like to drop by or contact for more details.

Take a look at what's available on your campus and see what peaks your interest.

Best of Luck!

Lory
