Sharon’s Answer

Hi Enrique! To become a cardiac surgeon, you need to:

1) Graduate high school (4yrs);
2) Get a Bachelor's Degree (4-year college) with a focus on pre-medical studies/courses;
3) Go to Medical School for at least 4 years. Its a good idea to do an additional year of research with a cardiac surgeon as your mentor.
4a) Apply to General Surgery residency (5years), then Cardiothoracic fellowship after residency (2-3 yrs); OR
4b) Apply for an integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery residency (6 years).

Its a very long process, but focus on doing your best every step along the way. That way, if you change your mind at any time, you will still have options. Good luck!

Cindy’s Answer

If you know you want to be in medicine, there are some programs that offer combined undergrad and med school training to complete in 6 years, and then you would move on to residency and fellowship training. To do specifically heart surgery requires extra training, that usually is fulfilled by doing general surgery residency which can be 3-5 years and then fellowship training in heart surgery which is 2-3 years (integrated program would combine the general surgery and heart surgery into 6 years total.
