What type of schedule do event planners have, are the days and weekends flexible?
I am a high schooler who is involved in a lot but has most of my weekends free! #event-planning

Hello Abbie, it's good to see you've already started to think about your future. To answer your question, event planners work 24/7 from the time they are contracted for an event.
Hi Sikawayi! I’m so curious what you mean by this. Literally 24/7? What is the schedule like between being contracted for events? Any details you can add to your answer to clarify would be really helpful to the Student 🙂

Hello Alexandra, I'm sorry let me clarify. The term 24/7 just means your time is not your own, you are on call from the planning stage of the event until the end of you event.

Hi there,
High school is a huge commitment in itself and you need to enjoy your youth! So my suggestion would be to start small, perhaps working banquets as a server. Or a country club that has events on weekends mostly. Might not be exactly what you are thinking, but by doing smaller you can learn, get to know your managers or even the on site event manager. And start to learn what they do, maybe even help them out!
An event planner works all different schedules, depending on what type of event planner you want to be. I work full time as an exhibits/event manager. And I travel to events and sometimes I’m gone for 10 days, working over the weekend! But I’ll take time off while on the road (go hiking or running…exploring wherever I am😊). Some event planners work on a project by project basis, so they make their own schedules. But there are risks with this type of situation; you have to find work or places to contract you. Something to think about for future!
What is your interest or passion? Do you love weddings? Or sports? There are many opportunities in events planning so think about what you love and after you finish high school or college can work towards that specialized area.
Best of luck!

Hello Abbie,
Usually event planners have non traditional work hours and no two days are the same. Each event an event planner organizes can be very different as well as the client. I encourage you to work for an event planner to experience a day in a life. Hands on experience is a great teacher and will aide you in determining what areas of event planning you desire to work.
Much success to you in your future endeavors.

Hi Abbie, love to see you are planning for your future. I agree with everyone's comments above, I have been in the meetings and events industry for about 11 years and yes, you are working about 24/7 and will need to learn to be flexible. The industry requires many weekends and evenings and is not a traditional "9am-5pm" job.
Are you interested in the social market? Events & Weddings? Or interested in more of the corporate side of planning?
Good luck!
