I'm a proponent of experience and certifications.

Jump in to the workforce and make the most of certifications (i.e. aws cloud, data security, etc ...) that are open to you.

A lot of it depends on which area(s) you would like to specialize (System Administration, System Architecture, Security, Network, Data Analytics, Software Development, Database Administration etc..)
Work experience will definitely help you to figure out which direction you would like to start off in. If you are able to do any internships while pursuing your degree, that would be very beneficial.
There are also a lot of resources online to learn about different technologies.
This is a large field, so there are always opportunities to learn new skills and move in different directions, so being open to learning will always help you.

Michael’s Answer

Great question, after getting a BS degree in engineering you can move onto management or specialize. Higher education degrees can lead you to different job opportunities. So it is important to understand what interests you. Questions you can ask yourself are do you like to work with people and are you interested in management? Or maybe you found a specific interest while in college. You can get a masters in a specific elevation of engineering like machine learning or Virtual reality. The other option is to get a an MBA and move towards management. Note, there are some newer degrees like MS in Engineering with a concentration or Masters in Information Systems Management.

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Do your research. Try working on understanding what you are good at and then try expand on your knowledge.
Prepare to take your entrance exam!

Michael’s Answer

An advanced degree in whatever subfield you are interested is your best choice. For example, if you are into security then you are likely to to enjoy a security focused masters. If programming is your focus, then consider a traditional computer science masters. If you love data analysis then data science or informatics may be for you.

Your choice in fields should focus on what you are passionate about. Find that passion and you will have a higher chance of being "successful".

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Look up masters programs at the universities you are interested in
Research what the subfield does. Some of them are different in practice than their name would suggest.

K’s Answer

Hi Sarah,

Its is great question raised!
Being in IT field last 15 years, i had crossed many youngsters who want to get into IT field very quickly and start earning pocket full!
But my advice to them is, first decide your career path line.. ie., which technology you have been interested and are you comfortable to build your career in that line more stronger. Do couple of good certifications in that area, get exposed to how IT problems are identified and resolved.
Do some 4-5 projects ... understand the end to end basics.
Understand the very basics of how to deal with a problem statement and by what means. you have to learn this crux of understanding the issue indepth, before solution is provided. that will make you more stronger in the domain/ platform you plan to choose.

My advise to all young guys who are stepping into any career line, the very first 3-5 years , focus on work and get to know more things around your work related activities which makes you more independent and stronger in your domain you choose.... and be least bothered about salary! If your performance is good, rest will follow you automatically ... just stick to this mantra!

All the best!

Richard’s Answer

Once you complete your diploma you can go for a Bachelor of Engineer or Bachelor of Science degree. Most of the students like to work after getting a BE/BS degree, but some prefer to study further. It is upto individual choice what you would like to do. There are lot of opportunities in various fields inside computer science like being a developer, or working as QA, or technical support team member, working with product or project management teams.

I agree with others here that gaining experience is key, and while in pursuit of that experience, earning industry standard certifications is an important pathway to success.
