While it is important to read as often as possible, and to read as many different types of materials as you can find (books, magazines, websites), make sure you practice active reading. By this I mean stopping to look up any words whose meanings you don't know and learning their definitions and how to use them in sentences. Then try to work them into your own writing.

And while you are writing, try to find additional ways to express yourself by using a thesaurus. It's great if you already know what you consider the most appropriate words to express your meaning, but it's a good habit to look up other similar words as a way to expand your vocabulary.

By doing these things, your understanding and use of the language will expand and you will become a better writer overall.

TRAVEL AND LEARN YOUR TRADE - MEETING PEOPLES OF DIFFERENT TWISTS AND BENDS IS ONE WAY TO BECOME A GOOD WRITER BECAUSE IT MAKE S YOU LOOK AT YOURSELF IN UNFAMILIARIZED WAYS:

For those of you wandering the vast lands of an extended media industry ... There's hope! Indeed, there are some of you who have a strong 'penchant' desire to pursue a writing career ... that's great!

But it is a tough business to get into, especially for someone right out of school (assuming that's the case here). Well, take an example out of history ... my case ... for instance:

I came to Los Angeles after a long sojourn at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University, Montreal. I earned consecutive degrees in the fine arts with a MFA in film production to wrap it up. My goals were operational ... seek out and produce art.

Chance has it that my travels have lead me to hook-up, right-off the bat, with a group of music score composers working out of North Hollywood, California; strangely as it came to be but now, I'm effectively working in the movie music industry.

My first impression at such a 'career-forking-path affair' is that a young and eager writer should 'travel' and 'absorb' as much of the world's all mighty glory, as he or she can ... learn your trade in the field! Good luck and best wishes ... See'ya in Hollywood$.

Hi W.C.Y!

It's wonderful to hear that you want to be a writer. I would suggest reaching out to other writers in order to continually improve your skill. Networking can be a great way to gain insightful guidance and make connections with writers of all different levels and aspirations. It can help you learn more about different careers in the writing field while also improving your own practice. Are there any writing groups or organizations in your area or online? Are there any teachers or professors that you could reach out to for feedback? Connecting with others may help you to expand your writing knowledge and experience.

I hope this helps! Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Madeline

I think it is wonderful that you want to become a writer. I read the other answers that were given and all of them were great. I wanted to add to the conversation by saying watch and really listen to the dialogue that is being spoken in movies. I know that was one way that I became a better writer by watching how stories are told. I recommend also doing what the others suggested because all those things will be helpful to your writing and to the process of writing. I hope that this answer has been helpful to You. Happy writing!

Simeon’s Answer

Find a good editor that you trust. Having professional eyes look over your work is worth every penny you can get. Be careful about posting your work online as you don't know who might try to repurpose it as their own work. Get the first edition of your work completed as quickly as possible and work on being a ruthless editor of your own work.
