Hi Josh. From what I’ve seen, real estate agents do often get to choose their own hours. It’s less of a strict 9-5 desk job, since much of a real estate agent’s salary is based off of commissions from selling homes. For this reason, real estate is a very popular job choice for working parents or others who would like to work more atypical hours. However, it’s important to remember that you need to be flexible enough to meet your client’s needs in terms of scheduling showings. While becoming a real estate agent may sound appealing because of the flexibility, lots of jobs have become much more flexible during COVID and you don’t necessarily have to become a real estate agent to be able to set your own hours.

Many companies offer a flexible work hours to help employees better balance their personal and professional lives. Having flexible hours helps improve productivity and has the potential to increase an employee's job satisfaction. Flexible hours tend to vary depending on a job's requirements.

As it becomes increasingly complex to manage flexible team members, employees and employer come to an understanding before they follow flexible timing.

There are pros and cons with flexible working. It is purely based on company to company, not just limited to role and work nature.

To address those challenges, they fix timing of meetings on specific days, so that team makes sure they are available for the meetings. Rest of the time, the deliverables matter. Not the login and logout time.

For those in real estate, the sales number and monthly targets matter, not just logged hours.

Hi Josh, good question!

From what I've seen, having a flexible work schedule means you are able to move around your work based on your needs. However, I don't think you will always be able to choose your hours, because there are times you have to work when things get busy or you have clients who need things to be done asap. Flexibility is more related to being able to make time for events that pop up, or starting work earlier/later, etc. But it really depends on what time of year it is and how busy things are. Hopefully that helps!

HI Josh,

Flexible schedules are often just that, flexible. However you still need to keep in mind that you could have to work hours that you would not actually choose to work. (For example, working at night, after 5, is not ideal as I am not at my best in the evening.) You need to be responsive to the needs of the customer and each customer can have very different needs. Sometimes it may feel like you don't have control since you need to consider the needs of the other person. The great part of a flexible schedule is having each day be different because the schedule may change every day. It certainly is a balancing act between your work requirements and your personal life.

Katie’s Answer

Hi Josh, I work for a real estate firm. I am not an agent myself, but most of my coworkers are. At our firm, there is a weekly meeting on Monday mornings that everyone is supposed to come to (sometimes people can't make it) and then the rest of the week is kind of up to them. The important thing to keep in mind is what you're trading for that flexibility, especially when you're just starting out. If you don't sell a property, you won't get paid. If you have the financial stability to go for a while (sometimes months) without a paycheck and you're the kind of driven person who can put your nose down and get to work, then this could be a great field for you. It's not for everyone, I had a coworker stop coming in after he lost a bigger listing and he ended up quitting a few weeks later. Until you have a solid reputation and a bunch of clients, it's really hard and frustrating, but if you can stick with it the work will get easier and the paychecks will get bigger and more frequent.
Thank you comment icon Katie, thank you! Josh

Real estate agents make their own hours. The times you work will have a lot to do with your clients availability. As an agent your job is to serve them and meet their needs. This means you will need to be available not only when your schedule permits but also when theirs does as well.

Great question! Being a real estate agent typically requires being available when your clients need you, which could be at any time of day and any day of the week. Some meetings and activities are in your control in terms of when you get them done (such as paperwork), some are on strict schedules (trainings and staff meetings, for instance), and some are based on demand (when you meet with clients, when you attend networking events, etc.). Many people who need or desire a flexible schedule pursue a real estate career, and it can work well if you go into it with the right expectations! Do know, though, that many real estate agents are required to do some work on nights and weekends, which is when most clients are available.
