Jim’s Answer
There are many types of Electricians. Some work on residential houses and some do commercial/industrial work. There are other fields that are on the electronics side more involving circuitry than building/construction. Electricians normally start out as apprentices, then journeymen. After about 5-8 years you have enough practical experience to take an electrical test. Typically these tests have a written component so they know you understand how to do the job safely. They have a National codebook that you need to understand. It is a reference book so you do not need to memorize it but know how to quickly lookup information that pertains to the work you are doing.
The other component is a practical test. After gaining the 5-8 years of practical experience this is the fun part!
Electrical is a fascinating job path. If you are one of those people that likes to tinker with broken things or are even interested in how things work, you may want to consider this career. I hope this helps!
