What is the best college or school in New Jersey for Phlebotomy?

I really have a hard time finding an accredited college or an institution that has a phlebotomy program.

Thank you comment icon Hi, Mel. Not all states require a degree for Phlebotomy, some only require a certification. If you plan on going into Nursing or Medical school you will be trained on proper techniques for drawing blood. I recommend you look into requirements for your state as this might be why you are not having much luck finding what you're looking for. Good luck! Tiffany Stone

Most phlebotomy-specific programs are offered at trade schools or community colleges, and are not always offered at universities unless phlebotomy education is a part of a larger degree or program, such as through an EKG technician program. If you are looking to only get a phlebotomy certification and practice only as a phlebotomist, I would recommend looking into phlebotomy-specific schools that prepare students for high quality certification. For example, the National Phlebotomy Association's phlebotomy certification has more education requirements than the National Healthcareer Association's equivalent, so finding a program that meets the testing requirements for the NPA's certification would allow you to pursue better job prospects upon gaining your certification.

I'd recommend browsing programs that are within a driving distance of where you live. You can use a site like the following to locate every phlebotomy program in your area. Then I'd reach out to each to learn more about each school's certification eligibility, tuition cost, program duration, class schedules, job placement assistance, etc.

Congratulations on your interest in phlebotomy or in becoming a phlebotomist. One role where you could use the skill of phlebotomy is as a medical assistant- MA (Certified Medical Assistant – CMA or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant – CCMA). To locate medical assistant programs, that are accredited, look for MA programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

In searching for information, I find official state sites (even when students are in other states) are a valuable resource. For New Jersey, visit the Official Site of the State of New Jersey Department of Education (see website link below). At the bottom of the site is an email address and phone number. Reach out as you may find a great person at the state who has a list of accredited schools for New Jersey and the person may have a source for the best schools as well.

Also, plan to take the medical assistant certification exam. Your job options with the skill of phlebotomy and certification could be used in healthcare settings such as ambulatory offices, lab centers, research, or more depending on the MA scope of practice for New Jersey.

If you are interested in starting as a phlebotomist because you would like to return to school for a degree in another healthcare role (e.g registered nurse, doctor, physician assistant or others) and would like experience in healthcare and working with people, great. However, it is not a requirement to start as a phlebotomist for the healthcare roles mentioned.

And, if you are interested in becoming a phlebotomist because you love the role in caring for people, then go for it. Just remember, to provide the highest quality and safe care to the patients, work well with your healthcare team, and take care of yourself.
