If you go more towards the research end of marine biology you can spend a lot of time in the lab analyzing data gathered. Going towards more of the conservation end, you can spend a lot of time in the field just trying to gather data. Many marine biologists that I know tend to try and balance between the two to maximize the time in the lab and the field
