Shaun’s Answer

College can feel large and intimidating, you should give yourself the time and space to meet with student groups and people that you may not have been exposed to in your high school/hometown. For example, if your roommates are going to a student group event that you typically wouldn't have gone to, say Yes and go! A lot of your experience in college should be about learning about yourself. How do you work best (e.g., studying in the library, meeting with professors and asking questions at office hours, studying with friends to hold each other accountable), who do you like spending time with, what college courses spark your interest the most, and ultimately what brings you happiness so that when you graduate you know the best path for you in your life!

Without a doubt, that would be time management and organizational skills! You will need to stay on top of things, or, risk falling behind and struggling to play catch-up. It's very easy to procrastinate and decide to attend events when you should be studying. Block out some time for fun, and some time for chores (laundry, etc). If your classes are not back to back, use the time between classes to do readings, review notes, etc. It's easy to waste that time visiting with friends.

Good question!

I echo what Kim said here as well because in high school, you have someone holding you accountable. In college, for the most part, you have to hold yourself accountable. You have to get yourself to class, complete assignments, ask for help, etc. Some professors will take attendance (for a class participation portion of your grade) and some will not. It's really easy to allow yourself to skip class, but this can snowball quickly and get out of control. So you'll need self-discipline and self-accountability in college. I'm not saying you can't have fun - you just need to know when you can have fun and when you need to get work done.

Be open-minded. College is a wonderful time for personal and professional growth. It is great to have a direction during college, but it is even better to try new things and step out of your comfort zone. You will be surrounded by people with all different backgrounds and experiences, which makes college an amazing time to learn many new things. Don't be afraid to fail! Failure can be the best teacher, and even if you didn't enjoy a new experience (i.e. joining a club or sport), at least you can say that you tried.

A beginner's mindset is one of the most important things you can bring. You can shape your college experience into literally whatever you want it to be. That's the exciting part. You're going to meet so many new people and be exposed to so many new experiences that your interests and goals are bound to change, and that's OK. That's how you really find fulfillment in what you're studying and eventually doing as a career. Don't make the mistake of shaping those things based on the expectations of others (parents, friends, peers, etc.). From my own experience, time management, discipline, accountability, and all of that stuff only becomes an issue when you have absolutely no interest in what pursuing in school.

Lizzie’s Answer

When preparing to go to college, it is important to think through what objects you use most in your everyday life.
Here are a list of some useful items to bring:
1. Extension cords - make sure you look on your college's website to see what type of extension cords are allowed because many colleges have specific requirements
2. Mattress pad - colleges also have specific requirements on the type of mattress pad so also look online for your college's rules
3. Fan - depending on the college, dorms might not have AC
4. Long phone cord - most college rooms only have a few outlets and sometimes they are not conveniently located so a long phone cord is helpful
5. Shower shoes
6. Shower Caddy
7. Command hooks - very helpful in hanging your towel in your room
8. Hangers
