Anthony A.’s Answer

There are many sub-topics covered in Accounting - book keeping, cost accounting management accounting, financial planning, consolidations, tax, etc. You should study as many of these as possible to gain a broad perspective. I may also suggest you think of the career you are aspiring to so that you take relevant courses that will best prepare you for the job..."begin with the end in mind". Public accounting and obtaining your CPA is also a good path to consider as the practical work in public accounting provides valuable work experiences in different industries, in addition to building business contacts and communications skills.

Haley’s Answer

I would suggest being intentional about a second major/minor while studying. Data science or computer science may be really good choices for a minor as the field of accounting becomes more reliant on data analysis and technology. Having a grasp on these data-related concepts will be helpful when you are looking for jobs and beginning your career.

Haley’s Answer

It depends on the university, but typically an accounting degree covers the following topics: Introductory/fundamental accounting concepts, cost accounting, government accounting, audit/tax, and a broad view into other accounting areas.

Austin’s Answer

You will study the topics described in the comment above. You will also have the opportunity to study how transactions (i.e. activities that businesses perform in order to make money) are accounted for, which is the core of accounting. Take advantage of understanding how those transactions are described and recorded. Accounting classes will teach you how to think critically and organize transactions within the general accounting rules that help companies record and report financial results so that all parties interested in the business are able to compare and understand the performance during a period of time.
Accounting is the heart of how businesses are evaluated, so by focusing on how accounting works, you are able to take those skills within all future business classes and your career.
