The main key things to being a good nurse:
Be compassionate. Always try to remember that the person you are taking care of is someone’s loved one. How do you want to be treated or how do you want your family and friends to be treated? This also goes for how you treat those you work with whether it is someone higher or lower on the pay scale than you. Do not be ok with a culture of “nurses eat their young” or a hostile work environment because someone thinks it is ok to treat new people or others like they aren’t worth anything. Going with this, enjoy helping others. Nursing will challenge you in many ways and it is easier if you truly enjoy helping others.
Love learning. NEVER stop learning. Whether it is a better way to do things, more information about something, or learning something new. Never stop learning. You are a danger if you think you know everything.
Be a person of a good character. If you make a mistake, own up to it and learn from it. Strive to do your best every day. You can help make someone’s day better or you can be a cause of their day being worse. Good luck!
