Great question, here's the real answer, Marketing is nothing new. It just evolves as our technology and means of communication do, and marketers have to evolve with it.

There are 2 sides to the marketing industry, the creative and the analytical so it's really an open space for both right sided and left sided thinkers (Right side - Creative, Left side - Analytical). Though with advancements in technology and a global marketplace, it's good to understand both sides of the industry.

Here's an example, my business partner is an old style analytical marketer, he's about product polling, test market analysis, response gauging, and effectiveness in the message reaching the audience... but he has to relearn all this to adapt to a market space that now includes media outlets such as internet video, social media and mobile advertising. To be current he has to understand the impact of impressions, influence and reach along with all the old school stuff he knows.

Me, I'm a creative, a visual communicator, I have had to go beyond just creating the message, I have had to learn about impact, influence, engagement, returns and so many other data points so my designs went beyond just making cool advertisement... my visual messages have to work for the client to gain return and give Mark the data points he needs. So we both have had to evolve over the last 20 years to a new global stage of marketing and advertising.

Marketing is the plan and the data, advertising is the execution and media is the outlet and as long as buyers are buying there will always be a need for these things and as long as technology and the media keeps evolving none of these things are going to go away. In fact the landscape of the industry will continue to become more competitive because manufactures, corporations, businesses trying to get the attention of a population that is inundated with advertising, will want the best people who have a strong track record of capture, to do their marketing for them.

Thank you comment icon I have been wondering about this since I know I am on the creative side of advertising/ marketing. Thanks so much! Ellie

In my opinion, this is a growing field with high demand. The skill set is needed for a lot of different communications positions or businesses. I took this 10-week course a few years ago (good list of the skills to build):

General Assembly is fairly well tapped into workplace needs so the fact that they have this course indicates that there is demand for digital marketers. Online commerce is only increasing and so will the need for people who can create and test online ad copy, place ads, test, tweak, distribute ad buys and work with UX/web designers to increase click-through, purchasing, etc. I work in a nonprofit, but we are also hiring someone with these competencies to help us reach and build new audiences through multiple channels and increase engagement with our content. digitalmarketing social-media-marketing online-marketing

Depending on your age and where you are in your educational pursuits, it is a fairly new career option. I see it as a growing field as internet shopping is the norm and traditional shopping is becoming more like an event with strolling malls, river walks and shopping districts with activities, restaurants, and stores combined. People shop more for the experience. When they want something quick or don't want the time commitment or weather does not allow, they go to their computers. Good luck in developing media markets. I believe it is the next big online industry.
