Hello!
As a former hair stylist (now educator), I can tell you first hand that you get out of it what you put in to it.
It takes about a full year to build a clientele. You won't learn it all in Cosmetology school- you will have to go to conferences and proceed with continuing education after you are licensed. If you are serious, it will be a great idea to speak to successful people in the industry. Ask them how they got started. Who did they work for? Having a good mentor is a wise decision in becoming a successful stylist. It's hard work- physically and mentally.
If you learn from the best, you will become the best!

Hello Jason,
Stylists’ earnings can vary depending on factors such as their experience, location, and the type of styling they specialize in (e.g., hair, fashion, or makeup). According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median hourly wage for a hairdresser, hairstylist, and cosmetologist in 2020 was $14.71. For skincare specialists, the median hourly wage was $14.82. However, these figures can be higher in metropolitan areas and for more experienced professionals.
In terms of annual earnings, the BLS reports that the median annual wage for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists in 2020 was $30,390, while skincare specialists earned a median annual wage of $34,570. These figures can be influenced by factors such as the number of clients a stylist can accommodate in a day, the cost of services provided, and the stylist’s ability to sell additional products.
As for the stability of the job, the employment of hairstylists, hairdressers, and cosmetologists is projected to grow 8% from 2020 to 2030, according to the BLS. This growth rate is considered average compared to other occupations. The demand for personal care and grooming services is expected to remain steady, providing job opportunities for stylists.
While it may be possible to save and invest enough to retire early or late, it would depend on an individual’s specific financial situation, spending habits, and investment strategies. Becoming a stylist can be a rewarding career, but it may not necessarily guarantee early or late retirement without additional income streams or careful financial planning.
GOD BLESS,
James.

https://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/forms_pubs/publications/faqs.shtml has details on training and licensing required to become a stylist. California requires 1000 hours of training via an approved school https://barbercosmo.ca.gov/schools/approved_schools.pdf or an apprenticeship https://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/applicants/apprentice_info.pdf.
https://www.comparably.com/salaries/salaries-for-stylist-in-san-francisco-ca and https://www.ziprecruiter.com/Salaries/Fashion-Stylist-Salary-in-San-Francisco,CA have some salary ranges. Your pay will depend on your skills and how much clients are willing to pay. My impression is that becoming a well paid stylist can be challenging and requires a significant time and $ investment for training and licensing, Its a very competitive industry and you have to be really good to make a good living.
I would visit nearby hair salons and talk to stylist there to see if its the career for you.
