Internships/Research in College

I'm planning to take on some internships related to biomedical engineering when I am in college. What are some ways I can seek entry-level internships/research positions for the first time?

Great question Jessie! I know a lot of college students struggle with this, and I did too. The biggest piece of advice I have is that the internet is a great starting point. LinkedIn is a great resource to use when looking for jobs. A lot of companies post job openings (including internships) on LinkedIn, so having an updated account will allow you to see the job openings relevant to your field and often you can apply for the jobs directly on LinkedIn. Not everything will be on LinkedIn, but you can use other job search websites to find openings and apply through there or on the company website directly. My university had another website (Handshake) which is an online recruiting platform that helps connect students with potential employers - I would see if your university has something like this!

Also, I would highly recommend going to career fair if your college has that. You can typically see the companies/jobs that will be there and apply online, but meeting the recruiters face to face will help your application stand out and give you an opportunity to learn more about the position to make sure it is right for you. It's a two way street!

I hope this helps but always feel free to talk to your advisors/teaches/mentors for additional advice and resources your college may offer. Good luck!

Hi Jessie! Great question! I would recommend that you look into your engineering department. Look for clubs and organizations to be a part of, these connections will be a great resource to hear about internship and research opportunities. Wishing you the best of luck!

If you have a list of companies you're interested in I recommend directly applying on their websites. However, if you are open to new suggestions many colleges hold career fairs for their students in which various companies attend and advertise their open roles. Also, recommend chatting with career advisors offered at your university.
