Christy’s Answer

Videogames do not, in themselves, lead to violence. That is a myth. Videogames have been shown to have more positive impacts than negative ones. Here's one article about it: https://www.idtech.com/blog/video-games-are-good-for-you

It's common for something that is new and popular in the culture to be blamed for making bad things happen. At one time, dancing the waltz was considered to damage morals. Then jazz was considered to be bad. The rock and roll was bad. Then comic books were blamed for juvenile delinquency. And now we have videogames being blamed.

Violence has always been a part of the human condition. There are many causes for violence and few of them have to do with what we read or listen to for pleasure. The true causes of violence are rooted in such things as being raised in a home with violence, living in conditions of severe social and economic inequality that cause strife, being oppressed by authoritarian figures, being brutalized because of skin color or religion or ethnicity. Always look beyond the easy answer to find the true root of violence. It isn't videogames.

Madi’s Answer

Hi Frankie,

I am not sure if it would be correct to say that video games are the primary cause of someone acting violently. There are many factors that could be at play. However, it is true that some video games may desensitize some people to violence through the frequent exposure.

Jolene’s Answer

Hi Frankie!

The idea that video games lead to violence... Is a myth. Honestly, That myth was created by adults and parents, as a way to try and scare kids away from playing video games.

Definitely read the article that Christy posted! It's good to read up on information about the truth of video games, and why they can help you. The only bad thing that I know for a fact can come from video game use though: Eye fatigue! But that can result from any prolonged use of a device with a screen. Other than that though... Video games don't have to be a negative thing! They're a great source of entertainment, and even social interaction depending on how you play.
